Ground Transportation

In the current day and age, automobile usage is rampant.  In turn, emissions from combustion of petroleum based fuels is one of the biggest sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide worldwide.  It has been tested that there is approximately 19.56 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted for each mile traveled.  Through carpooling and using public transportation this can be reduced, but there are still emissions for such travel.

The next few calculations estimate your singular carbon emissions based on personal auto and public transportation (rail and bus systems) usage.

Air Transportation

Airlines are considered one of the largest singular inputs into atmospheric carbon dioxide, and one single round-trip flight can emit enough carbon dioxide equal to a year of carbon-conscious living.  If need be, mileage can be researched at your airline provider or a mapping website.

Household Emissions

Buildings are one of the other leading causes for the high amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere.

Heating alone requires massive amounts of combustible material, usually coal or natural gas, which creates carbon dioxide as a biproduct.  Electricity is, in many ways, one in the same, with the requirement of some sort of combustion to initially create the energy that is converted for electrical usage.  In some cases, carbon neutral energy sources are available, such as nuclear, wind, and hydro-power, so if this is the case in your lifestyle, the amount of energy you use does not directly form carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Many people do not realize it, but waste can be considered a source of carbon in the atmosphere as well.  It is estimated an average of 1,018 lbs of carbon dioxide is due to waste per person per year.  This is mainly due to the fact that creation of these objects formulates carbon dioxide.  If these objects are reused or recycled, less of them will be made from scratch, in turn creating less carbon in the atmosphere.

Below you are given the option of providing monthly electricity and heating bill payments, from which carbon emissions are estimated.  The nation-wide average of $0.10/kwh is used for the electricity calculations, and average nation wide prices for each type of heating source are used as well.

Respiration

Respiration of aerobic organisms (like mammals, such as us) is a natural source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  In short, intake of oxygen is required to break down glucose into ATP, which provides energy to bodily functions.  Along with ATP, carbon dioxide and water are formed.

According to the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC), humans release an average of 1 kg CO2/day (SRC).  This fluctuates with daily activity, and could be considered a neglible amount compared to other anthropogenic sources of CO2, but it is still an input into the atmosphere, ignoring of which would be incorrect. This value is displayed below.
